The problem with India's traditional credit system
Walk into a bank and ask for a business loan. The first thing they ask for: ITR (Income Tax Return) for the last three years, GST filings, balance sheets, and a CIBIL score above 750. For a small business owner, a street vendor, a freelance graphic designer, or a self-employed professional who operates largely in cash or informal payments — most of that documentation either doesn't exist or doesn't reflect reality.
India has over 63 million MSMEs. The formal credit gap for these small businesses is estimated at over ₹25 lakh crore — that's the amount of credit they need but can't access through traditional banking channels. The reason isn't that they're bad borrowers. It's that the formal banking system has no way to verify their income and repayment capacity without the paperwork it's designed around.
UPI just changed that equation. Quietly, without most people noticing, the digital payment infrastructure India built for convenience is now becoming the foundation of an entirely new credit system.
