The Man from Mohanur: Who is N Chandrasekaran?
Before we discuss the AI transformation reshaping Tata Consultancy Services, it is important to understand the man driving it. Natarajan Chandrasekaran was born in 1963 in Mohanur, a small town near Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. Growing up in a modest Tamil family, he went on to become one of the most powerful business leaders in India.
Chandrasekaran joined TCS in 1987 as a fresh graduate and rose through the ranks over two decades. He became CEO of TCS in 2009, steering the company through a period of massive growth. In 2017, Ratan Tata personally chose him to become the Chairman of Tata Sons — the holding company that controls the entire Tata Group, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Titan, and of course, TCS.
His list of international honours tells a story of global recognition:
- Padma Bhushan (2022): India's third-highest civilian award
- French Legion of Honour (2023): France's highest order of merit
- Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) (2025): The British Crown's recognition
A Tamil Nadu native leading a $350 billion conglomerate, now stepping back into the trenches at TCS to personally oversee an AI transformation — this is a story worth understanding.
