You can now ask EPFO for your PF balance on WhatsApp. That sentence is why this is everywhere today. It is also only half the story. Business Today, updated 2 November 2026 at 5:55 PM IST from Noida, says Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the facility during EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day. Then their own tester hit an error the moment they picked the balance check.
If you have ever fought the EPFO member portal on a lunch break, the promise is obvious. No new app. No office visit. The chat app already on your phone. I would still save the number and wait a day before I trusted a WhatsApp screenshot of my retirement money.
What you can actually ask for
Business Today lists three account services. You can request your latest PF balance. You can see details of your five most recent transactions. You can access or download your EPF passbook. That is the whole member menu they describe. Not a withdrawal. Not a transfer between UANs. Not a grievance ticket.
There is a fourth item that is not your passbook. The same facility gives personalised guidance for employees completing requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, PMVBRY. Treat that as a help flow, not as proof your claim was approved.
The route in is simple, and it is the part people will screenshot wrong. Save EPFO’s verified WhatsApp number, +91 87964 41800. Send “Hi.” After the welcome message, pick a language, then pick a service. EPFO has also shared a QR code that opens the official chat directly. Use that QR or the number in this story. A random “EPFO support” account forwarding you a link is not this launch.
The rollout is already glitching
Business Today’s headline on the photo caption is the honest one: WhatsApp access amid initial technical glitches. The story says people trying to pull account details have hit errors and delayed responses. It attributes that reliability question to an India Today report, then adds its own test.
In that test the chatbot answered the first message and allowed language selection. When the publication chose the balance-check option, it returned an error. Several users also reported delayed responses. Some waited close to an hour, and then the request failed. The cause is unclear. It could be the first rush of users, or a technical fault. EPFO has not clarified which.
That is the difference between a launch and a service. The welcome message working does not mean the balance lookup works. If you message +91 87964 41800 tonight and get a cheerful menu followed by an error, you are seeing what Business Today saw on 2 November, not a scam by default. Still do not type your UAN, password or Aadhaar into a chat that was not the official thread. The story does not describe a login step beyond language and service selection. I am not going to invent one.
What this does not replace
Business Today is explicit about the fallback. If you need PF information immediately, the existing EPFO member portal and the UMANG app remain the alternatives while WhatsApp is glitching. I would use those for anything time-sensitive: a home-loan document, a job-change PF transfer check, a balance you have to paste into a form today.
WhatsApp is a convenience layer on top of a system a lot of salaried Indians already distrust because of delays. A chat window does not fix a mismatched KYC or a stuck claim. It only tries to show you the latest balance, five transactions and a passbook download without making you navigate the website. When the lookup errors, you are back on the portal anyway.
Also keep the boundary clear. “Check your balance” is not “withdraw your PF on WhatsApp.” Nothing in this Business Today piece says the chat can move money to your bank. Anyone who tells you to confirm a withdrawal inside WhatsApp by sharing an OTP is outside this news.
The other EPFO change buried in the same story
The WhatsApp launch is part of a wider set of digital measures. Separately, EPFO has started automatic settlement for eligible inoperative accounts that have Aadhaar-verified details and balances of up to Rs 1,000. Eligible members are supposed to get the money after the prescribed identity and bank-account verification, without filing an individual claim.
The scale they give is small on purpose. Around one lakh accounts, involving nearly Rs 5 crore. That is an average of about Rs 500 an account if you do the rough math, which fits a “up to Rs 1,000” leftover-balance cleanup. It is not a bonus, not interest, and not a new withdrawal rule for people with a normal PF corpus. If your balance is a few lakhs, this paragraph is not about you.
Do not mix the two announcements in a family WhatsApp forward. One is a chatbot that may show your balance and is currently erroring for some users. The other is a quiet settlement of tiny inactive accounts. They arrived in the same news cycle. They are not the same button.
How I would try it
Save +91 87964 41800 from the Business Today report, or scan the QR EPFO shared. Send Hi. Pick your language. If the balance option fails, stop. Do not keep resending personal details to “make it work.” Check the member portal or UMANG if you actually need the number today. Try WhatsApp again in a day or two, once the first-day rush Business Today mentions has either been confirmed as the cause or fixed.
And if a second number messages you first, claiming to be EPFO and asking for PAN, Aadhaar or an OTP, that is not the flow in this story. The official start is you messaging the verified number, not a stranger messaging you.
What is still unknown
We do not know how many members successfully pulled a balance on day one. We do not know whether the error is account-specific or everyone who taps balance. We do not know when EPFO will say the glitch is cleared, because they had not clarified the cause when Business Today published at 5:55 PM IST on 2 November. We do know the intended menu: latest balance, last five transactions, passbook download, plus PMVBRY guidance. We know the number they printed. We know the first press test did not get the balance.
That is still a useful launch, if it settles. PF lookups have lived on a website and UMANG for years. Putting them in WhatsApp is the right surface for how India actually messages. Shipping it while the balance button returns an error is how a good idea becomes a “EPFO down again” joke by evening. Give it the official number. Do not give it your trust until the balance comes back.
