Open Google on your phone tonight and the AI answer may come with a shop attached. Google is expanding ads inside AI Mode to India and nine other countries. Moneycontrol reported it on 29 October 2026: the ads sit inside the conversational search experience and will be labeled “Sponsored.” This is not a rumour from a screenshot. It is Google saying the test that started in the United States in May 2025 is now a rollout.
If your family group has been treating AI Mode like a clean answer box, that phase is ending. The box still answers. It also sells.
What is actually shipping
AI Mode is the chat-style layer on Google Search. You ask a longer question, you get a written answer, you ask a follow-up. Until now, a lot of those answers in India looked like a product demo: no blue links fighting for the top slot, no shopping unit glued to the first line. Ads change the texture. Google says they will be clearly labeled Sponsored. Read that label every time. A paragraph that sounds like advice can still be a placement.
The first wave is ten countries: India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore. Google plans more in the fourth quarter of 2026, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. India is not a later market on this list. It is in the opening ten.
In the US, the same expansion adds multiturn ads. Those can show up on follow-up queries inside AI Mode, not only on the first prompt. Moneycontrol does not say multiturn ads are live in India yet. Do not tell people a second question on google.com from Chennai will definitely pull a second ad. The confirmed India fact is the Sponsored unit inside the AI Mode experience. The follow-up version is a US piece of the same announcement.
Why Google is doing this now
The timing is the earnings call on 28 October, not a random product blog. Alphabet’s September-quarter revenue rose 25 percent year on year to $127.6 billion. Cloud did the heavy lifting: Google Cloud revenue hit $30.7 billion, up 103 percent. Sundar Pichai tied that to demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions, and said Alphabet had reached an annual revenue run rate of half a trillion dollars. The company kept its 2026 capital-expenditure forecast at $195 billion to $205 billion. Free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion in the quarter, worse than negative $5.9 billion the quarter before. About 65 percent of technical-infrastructure investment went to servers and networking, 35 percent to data centres. CFO Anat Ashkenazi said capex is expected to rise again, significantly, in 2027.
Search did not match that cloud story. Revenue from Google Search and other services rose 12 percent year on year to $63.35 billion. That is slower than 17 percent the previous quarter and 19 percent in the first quarter of 2026. Total Google advertising revenue grew 10.6 percent to $82 billion, from $74.2 billion a year earlier. YouTube ads grew 9.2 percent to $11.21 billion, the slowest YouTube ad growth Moneycontrol notes for this year, versus 13 percent the quarter before and 11 percent in the first quarter.
Chief business officer Philipp Schindler put part of the Search slowdown on AI Mode itself. His line, from the 28 October call: the strong growth in AI Overviews had an impact because of the lower monetisation they were seeing in AI Mode. He then said the company feels good about the trajectory, ad experiments have shown promising results, and Google is scaling ads within both AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and more queries. Foreign exchange was, he said, the biggest factor in the Search deceleration. Retail took a hit too. Some Asia-Pacific advertisers were affected by the European Union dropping its de minimis exemption. Media and entertainment spend normalised after an unusually strong second quarter around the FIFA World Cup.
Hold those causes apart. AI Mode is not the whole slowdown. It is the part Google can fix by putting ads in the answer. India is where a huge share of those answers now happen in a local language, on a phone, between a UPI payment and a recharge.
What Pichai said people are actually doing
Pichai’s frame on the call was: build the best Search experience first, monetise after. He said AI investment is driving more usage and more queries, including commercial queries, and that year-on-year query growth is at its highest in five years. Queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than a traditional search. One in five AI Mode searches globally uses voice, images, or documents. Visual search has crossed 50 billion searches a month. He also called AI agents a new frontier for Search, and said Google plans to bring those capabilities to Search and the Gemini app. The Gemini app, he said, has one billion users. People are already using it for multi-step jobs, not only questions. He said the Gemini 4 series handles those tasks well, and that agents will be a unifying layer across Chrome, Android, and Workspace.
For an Indian user, “three times longer” is the whole product change. A normal search is “best 5G phone under 20000.” An AI Mode search is “I am in Coimbatore, I want a phone with a good camera, my budget is 20,000, I already have Jio, don’t suggest a huge phone.” That second query has a city, a budget, an operator, and a constraint. It is also a shopping brief. A Sponsored card inside that answer is more valuable to a seller than a blue link under ten results, because the user already told Google the budget.
What this does to a normal Indian search
Think about the searches that actually pay someone’s salary. “Nearest service centre for this scooter.” “Term plan for a 32-year-old non-smoker.” “Laptop for video editing under 1 lakh.” “Which mutual fund SIP for five years.” AI Mode will write a tidy paragraph. From this rollout, a labeled ad can sit in that conversation. The label is the protection. The risk is skimming. People treat a chat answer as neutral because it does not look like a search ad from 2016. It looks like a friend who read the internet.
Nothing in the Moneycontrol report says ads will be sneakily unlabeled. It says the opposite: clearly labeled Sponsored. Use that. If you are comparing loans, phones, colleges, or hospitals, scroll until you can tell which sentence was paid for. If the answer will not separate them, open the cited links yourself. AI Mode does not cancel the old web. It just puts a written layer on top, and that layer now has a rate card.
Small businesses should read Schindler, not the panic posts. He said experiments looked promising and the company is scaling. He did not publish India CPCs, a self-serve toggle name, or a date when every AI Mode query in India will carry an ad. A shop in Madurai cannot “opt in to AI Mode ads” based on this story alone. If you already run Google Ads, assume your existing Search campaigns are the pipe Google will test through, and check the ad account over the next few weeks for new placements instead of guessing a menu path.
The money tension, without the science fiction
Cloud grew 103 percent. Search grew 12 percent. Capex is still aimed at $195–205 billion this year, with another step up expected in 2027, and free cash flow is negative. Ads in AI Mode are the bridge Google is building between those two facts. The AI answers that made Search feel new were also the answers that monetised worse. Scaling Sponsored units into India is how they try to close that gap without sending people back to ten blue links.
Pichai can be right that queries are longer and more commercial, and Schindler can still be right that AI Mode paid less per session. Both describe the same product. A long query is good for the model and awkward for the old ad slot. The new slot is the paragraph itself.
YouTube’s 9.2 percent ad growth is a reminder that this is not only a Search story. The ad engine across Google is growing slower than the cloud engine. AI Mode is the piece Indian users will notice first, because Search is the app we open without thinking.
What not to forward
Do not forward “Google Search is now pay-to-play in India.” Organic results are not cancelled in this report. Do not forward “every follow-up question will have an ad.” Multiturn ads are described for the US. Do not invent a rupee CPC, a start clock on a specific morning, or a claim that AI Overviews in India were ad-free until today and are now full. Schindler said Google is scaling ads in both AI Overviews and AI Mode. The headline expansion to India in this story is AI Mode, labeled Sponsored, in a list of ten countries.
Also separate the earnings miss chatter from the product. Alphabet missed Wall Street’s third-quarter revenue and earnings estimates in the wider coverage around this call, and the cash burn is real. That does not mean your next search is broken. It means the company is in a hurry to charge for the AI layer it just trained people to use.
What to do this week
Search something you would actually buy. A phone. A cooker. A course. Do it once in the usual Google box and once in AI Mode. See whether a Sponsored label appears, and whether the advice under it still names more than one brand. If you run ads for a living, pull last week’s Search terms and watch for AI surfaces in the placement report before you rewrite campaigns. If you publish or sell content, assume more answers will be read inside Google, with a paid line in the same screen, and put the fact someone needs in your own page anyway.
The short version for the group: Google is putting labeled ads inside AI Mode in India now, along with nine other countries, because those AI answers were making Search money grow more slowly. Search revenue was $63.35 billion, up 12 percent. Cloud was the rocket. The chat box is where they are coming to collect.
