Apple just put a finger on the MacBook Pro, and the India price starts at Rs 3,49,900. On 28 October 2026 the company unveiled 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max, a tandem OLED screen it calls PROLED XDR, and touch on a Mac for the first time. Moneycontrol filed the India pricing at 22:56 IST. Business Today, in a piece updated at 11:07 PM IST the same night, called it goodbye LCD, hello touchscreen. Pre-orders opened on 28 October. The machines start arriving on 6 November.

If your group chat is already asking "Mac-la touch-a, iPad-ah?", sit with the price list before you answer. This is not a student laptop. This is Apple charging a car-EMI number for a screen you can poke.

What actually launched

The lineup is four configurations, not one mystery SKU. A 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is Rs 3,49,900, or Rs 3,31,900 on the education price Moneycontrol printed. The 16-inch with M5 Pro is Rs 4,09,900, education Rs 3,85,900. The 14-inch with M5 Max is Rs 5,49,900, education Rs 5,12,900. The 16-inch with M5 Max is Rs 5,89,900, education Rs 5,52,900. Business Today matches the street prices on three of those four: 14-inch M5 Pro at Rs 3,49,900, 16-inch M5 Pro at Rs 4,09,900, 16-inch M5 Max at Rs 5,89,900. On the 14-inch M5 Max it prints Rs 5,449,900, which is an extra digit next to Moneycontrol's Rs 5,49,900. I am using the Moneycontrol ladder. Do not budget Rs 54 lakh for a 14-inch laptop because a comma landed wrong.

Pre-orders began on 28 October in 30 countries and regions, including the US, and the same India stories say pre-orders are open here with sales from Friday, 6 November. Neither story lists Indian bank cashback, a Flipkart card, or an exchange slab. If a seller adds one later, that is a seller offer, not part of this launch note.

John Ternus posted on 28 October: "We're glowing with excitement over the new MacBook Pro. You've gotta touch it to believe it." Business Today carried that line. The glow is not just marketing copy. Apple brought the illuminated Apple logo back on the lid, a look that had been gone from the MacBook Pro for about ten years, and Business Today treats the glowing logo as part of this design pass.

The screen is the product

PROLED XDR is tandem OLED. Two OLED layers work together. Moneycontrol says peak HDR and SDR brightness goes to 2,000 nits, contrast is 10,000,000:1, and refresh rate varies up to 120Hz. Business Today frames the refresh as ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz, the same idea iPhones have used for years: slow down when the picture is still, speed up when you scroll. Colour coverage is the editor number. Moneycontrol says the panel does P3 and Adobe RGB, with more than 80 percent of Rec. 2020 for HDR video and colour grading.

There is a nano-texture option to cut reflections. Business Today's write-up also mentions an anti-reflective coating and spells the glass option "nono-texture". Read that as the nano-texture option, not a new glass brand. The display engine, per Business Today, adjusts colour and brightness for the content, temperature, surroundings, and pixel use. That is the practical bit for a Chennai afternoon balcony or a glass-wall office in Bengaluru. A 2,000-nit claim does not help if the panel turns into a mirror.

Touch is not a Touch Bar revival. The old strip above the keyboard is not what this is. You tap the display. Scroll a page. Pinch a photo. Nudge a slide. Drag windows. Apple says it sits beside the keyboard and trackpad, not instead of them. Creative work is the pitch: drawing, virtual instruments, 3D models. If you already own an iPad with a Pencil and a Mac on the desk, ask yourself which of those jobs you will actually do with a finger on a laptop hinge. The stories do not mention Apple Pencil support. Do not assume the Pencil pairs.

Dynamic Island lands on the Mac in the same generation. Moneycontrol says it pulls Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri into one place: search the Mac, see notifications, control music, work with supported activities. Business Today says the cutout leaves more room for content and pairs it with a slimmer chassis. The weight it prints is 1.36 kg. It does not say whether that 1.36 kg is the 14-inch, the 16-inch, or a specific chip. Treat it as the figure in that story, not as both sizes.

M5 Pro, M5 Max, and the Indian buyer math

Apple's line, via Moneycontrol, is that M5 Pro and M5 Max are for software development, video editing, 3D rendering, and on-device AI. The M5 Max, it says, can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters locally. Both chips get an updated GPU, enhanced shader cores, and a third-generation ray-tracing engine. Unified memory goes up to 128GB. Storage can be configured up to 16TB. Those are ceilings, not the Rs 3,49,900 box. The entry 14-inch does not ship with 128GB and 16TB. If a listing claims that at the starting price, it is wrong.

For a working editor in India, the useful question is hours, not parameter counts. A DaVinci or Premiere timeline that used to need a desktop tower can stay on a lap. A developer running local models stops paying a cloud bill for every experiment. A student who only needs Chrome, Zoom, and Google Docs does not need this machine, and the education discount does not change that. Rs 3,31,900 off the education column is still a serious family decision. It is a discount off a flagship, not a campus deal next to a Windows laptop at Rs 70,000.

Put the rupees next to what else that money buys in October 2026. Rs 3,49,900 is several years of a solid phone-plus-laptop combo, or a big chunk of a two-wheeler, or a term of rent in a lot of cities. Rs 5,89,900 for the 16-inch M5 Max is a business purchase. If a client is paying you for colour-critical video, the Rec. 2020 coverage and 2,000 nits are the argument. If the client is paying you for Instagram cuts, last year's MacBook Pro still finishes the export.

Speakers, camera, and the bits people skip

Moneycontrol notes a six-speaker system with a claim of 50 percent deeper bass, a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones, and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. That is the call-and-edit kit: a client review on Meet without a separate webcam, and a mix you can check before you send it to a studio. It is not a home-theatre replacement. Bass claims on laptop speakers have a ceiling, and 50 percent deeper than a thin laptop is still a thin laptop.

What the two stories do not give you matters as much as what they do. No battery-hour figure appears in the Moneycontrol pricing piece or the Business Today touchscreen piece I am using. No watt-hour. No charger wattage. No port map. No word on whether the SD card slot, HDMI, and MagSafe layout changed. A separate Business Today photo story on the site talks up a 2nm M6 chip, a 24-hour battery, and a Rs 2.39 lakh start. That is a different configuration from the M5 Pro and M5 Max machines priced here from Rs 3,49,900. Do not merge those two articles into one spec sheet. If you need hours away from a plug, wait for a review that measures this exact chip and size.

Who should order on 6 November

Order if your work is the display. Colour grading, photo retouching where you zoom with a finger, presenting in a bright room, or a desk where an iPad and a Mac keep fighting for the same job. The 14-inch M5 Pro at Rs 3,49,900 is the one to price first. Step to the 16-inch M5 Pro at Rs 4,09,900 if you live in timelines and want the larger panel. Touch the M5 Max prices, Rs 5,49,900 and Rs 5,89,900, only if you already know you need the memory ceiling or the local-model claim. "Future proof" is not a reason at this rupee level.

Wait if you are curious about touch and otherwise happy. A first-generation touch Mac will collect papercuts: fingerprints on an OLED you edit on, palm hits while you type, apps that were never built for a finger. Apple says touch works with the keyboard and trackpad. It does not say every Mac app will feel native. Also wait if you wanted the glowing logo as a style buy and the rest of the spec is wasted on you. The logo does not grade your footage.

Students should run the education column and then still ask if a used or older Pro does the course. Rs 3,31,900 is the cheapest education price in this table, not a cheap laptop. Professionals on a company card should get the nano-texture question answered before the PO, because a glossy 2,000-nit panel in a window-heavy office is a different tool from a matte one.

How this sits in the Apple India pile

India already buys iPhones on EMI and MacBook Airs as the default "serious laptop" once Windows fatigue sets in. A touchscreen Pro does not replace the Air. It sits above it and asks a smaller set of people for a much larger cheque. The cultural shift is the finger. For fifteen-odd years Apple told the industry that a vertical touchscreen on a laptop was a bad idea, while Windows OEMs shipped convertible after convertible. This launch does not apologise for that. It just ships the feature, wraps it in OLED, and prices it like a Pro.

The practical Indian test arrives in stores after 6 November, not in the keynote. Put a finger on the panel with the keyboard in your usual typing position. See if your palm cancels a click. Open a real Premiere timeline, not a demo reel. Check the nano-texture upcharge, which neither of these two stories prints. Ask the education desk to show the Rs 3,31,900 configuration in writing, including RAM and SSD, before anyone says "starting at".

The short version for the group

Apple's first touchscreen MacBook Pro is real, it is OLED, and it is on sale to order in India from 28 October 2026, with arrivals from 6 November. M5 Pro and M5 Max, 14 and 16 inch. India prices: Rs 3,49,900, Rs 4,09,900, Rs 5,49,900, Rs 5,89,900. Education prices on the Moneycontrol table run Rs 3,31,900, Rs 3,85,900, Rs 5,12,900, and Rs 5,52,900. Up to 128GB unified memory and 16TB storage are the ceilings. 2,000 nits, 120Hz, Dynamic Island, a 12MP Center Stage camera, and a logo that lights up again. Battery hours, the port list, Pencil support, and the nano-texture price are not in these reports. If someone forwards a Rs 2.39 lakh M6 graphic, that is a different story. This one starts at three and a half lakh, and the finger is the feature you are paying to try.
