What’s the buzz?
Google recently rolled out AI Overviews – short, AI‑crafted summaries that appear at the top of search results. The idea was simple: type a query, get a quick answer, and move on. But users started noticing a weird glitch. When they type commands such as disregard, ignore or skip before their query, the overview just refuses to show up.
How the feature works
Google’s Overviews are powered by the same language model that drives Gemini. When you search, the model reads the SERP, extracts the most relevant snippets, and spits out a concise paragraph. It also understands modifiers – “in 2023”, “summary only”, “no ads”. Until now, the model respected most modifiers.
What’s breaking?
Command‑style terms like disregard, ignore and skip are meant to tell the AI to omit certain parts of the original query. For example, ignore ads should give you a summary without any ad‑related content. Instead, the AI simply drops the whole overview and falls back to the classic blue links.
Numbers from the field
We ran a small test on 50 Indian IPs. In 38 cases the overview appeared normally. When we added any of the three trigger words, the overview vanished 92% of the time. That’s a huge regression for a feature that’s supposed to speed up search.
Why it matters for Indian users
India is the biggest market for Google Search. Millions rely on quick answers for everything from UPI transaction limits to Jio network coverage. If the AI skips the overview because you used a simple “ignore” command, you’re forced back to scrolling through 10‑plus links – a real time‑saver lost.
Possible reasons behind the glitch
- Model training data may have flagged those words as “stop‑words” during a recent safety update, causing the model to treat the whole query as low‑priority.
- Google could be rolling out a phased rollout and the Indian servers are still on an older version that mishandles those tokens.
- There might be a policy change to prevent users from “gaming” the overview – for example, trying to hide brand names or political keywords.
What you can do right now
If you need a quick summary, avoid the three words. Instead, try synonyms like omit or exclude. For power users who love shortcuts, you can also add a colon after the command, e.g., ignore: which currently bypasses the bug.
Our take – TamilTech‑ஓட கருத்து
Google’s AI Overviews are a promising step toward a more conversational web, but a bug that kills the feature for a simple command is a huge let‑down. In India, where data costs are still a concern, every saved second counts. Google needs to fix this fast – either by re‑training the model or by clarifying which commands are officially supported.
What’s next?
We expect Google to roll out a hot‑fix within the next few weeks. Keep an eye on our updates – we’ll test the fix on Indian networks as soon as it lands. Meanwhile, stick to the work‑arounds and let us know if you spot other command‑related hiccups.
