iPhone Duo is still constrained. Ternus will not say when stock catches up

Business Today says CEO John Ternus told Reuters on the Q4 call that the iPhone Duo is constrained and he cannot predict when supply will match demand. A small fraction of units had inner-display issues, and eligible buyers were offered replacements.

Apple’s first foldable is selling faster than the company can build it, and the CEO just refused to put a date on the fix. Business Today, updated 3 November 2026 at 10:58 AM IST from Noida, quotes John Ternus telling Reuters: “Duo is constrained as of today.” The production ramp is going well, he said. Apple is trying to get phones to customers as fast as it can. Then the line that matters if you are still staring at a waiting list: “at this point, we’re not able to predict when supply and demand will be in balance.”

That is not a polite “ships in two weeks.” It is Apple saying the foldable it put in customers’ hands on 23 October is still short, and the person running the company will not guess the catch-up date.

What actually launched, and when

Business Today calls the iPhone Duo Apple’s first foldable smartphone. It went on sale on 23 October, after a month of preview. So by the morning of this story, buyers have had the phone for about eleven days. In that short window the paper says demand has been unprecedented, and Apple is running short of units against customer orders.

I would not turn “unprecedented” into a unit count. Business Today does not print how many Duos shipped, how long the India queue is, or what the Indian MRP is. Those numbers are not in this piece. What is in it is the CEO’s own word: constrained. Today. No balance date.

If you pre-ordered and the store app still says preparing, this quote is the explanation. Not a rumour from a reseller group. Ternus, to Reuters, on the back of the 2 November results.

The results were strong. The Duo still is not in stock

On 2 November Apple reported its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026. Business Today’s figures: revenue of $114.5 billion, up from $102.5 billion in the same quarter last year. Profit of $30.7 billion, compared with $27.5 billion a year ago. Gross margin up to 47.9 percent from 47.2 percent.

The company hit quarterly records in total revenue, iPhone revenue, and earnings per share. Services revenue was the highest ever. That bucket, as the story lists it, includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and Apple TV+.

The quarter also had a lot going on besides the foldable. Business Today names leadership transitions, Siri AI development, new iPhones, and this first foldable. Strong year-on-year numbers and a phone you cannot buy are not a contradiction. A constrained Duo can still sit inside a record iPhone quarter if the rest of the lineup, especially the phones people can actually walk out with, did the volume. The story says iPhone revenue set a record. It does not say the Duo was the reason.

The other problem: lines on the inner display

Supply is only half the conversation Ternus had. He also acknowledged display issues. His claim, as Business Today reports it: a small fraction of units were impacted. Affected models have already reached Apple. Replacements have been offered to eligible customers.

Last week, before this earnings quote, Apple confirmed it knew about inner-display issues that some iPhone Duo users reported, and told those people to contact AppleCare. Business Today points to its earlier piece that screens developed lines within days of launch and that the company was offering replacements.

“Small fraction” is Apple’s scale, not an independent count. The story does not say what percent, which batches, or whether Indian units are in that fraction. If your inner screen has lines, the path in this report is AppleCare, not a shop debate about whether the crease is normal. A foldable crease and a fault line are not the same thing, and this article is about reported inner-display issues, not a review of how the hinge feels.

The awkward timing is obvious. The phone is scarce, and a slice of the scarce phones needed a replacement. Ternus is saying both things at once: we cannot build enough, and the ones with the display fault are being swapped for eligible buyers. He is not saying the line problem is why the phone is constrained. Business Today does not make that link. Do not make it for them.

What this means if you are trying to buy one in India

Nothing in this Business Today story is an India stock update. No Reliance Digital count, no Blinkit restock, no Mumbai versus Delhi split. The constraint Ternus described is the company’s, spoken to Reuters, not a city-level inventory sheet.

Practically, a global constraint shows up here as a longer wait and a louder grey market. That second part is the risk. If Apple cannot say when supply meets demand, someone on Instagram will say they can, at a markup, with a bill that may not match Apple’s records. The replacement path in this story runs through AppleCare for eligible customers whose phones already reached Apple. A handset that never went through Apple’s sale is a worse place to start if the inner display fails.

I would wait for the official channel you already ordered from to move, or walk into an Apple store and ask what the current wait is, rather than pay a premium to skip a queue the CEO just said he cannot predict. There is no public date to race. That is the whole quote.

How to read a CEO shortage quote

Companies love a sold-out headline. It implies desire. Ternus did the less comfortable version. He said the ramp is going well, which is the reassurance, and then said he cannot predict balance, which is the admission. “Going well” without a date means factories are climbing and customers are still ahead of them. It does not mean next Monday.

Also separate the two Apple stories people will mash together in a forward. One is the foldable you cannot get. The other is a record quarter: $114.5 billion revenue, $30.7 billion profit, 47.9 percent gross margin, record iPhone revenue, record Services. Apple is not in trouble because the Duo is constrained. Apple cannot fulfil one new product while the rest of the machine prints a record. Both sentences fit inside the same Business Today piece.

What is still unknown

We do not know the ship number. We do not know the India allocation. We do not know the share of units with inner-display lines, only “a small fraction,” with replacements offered to eligible customers and a prior AppleCare instruction. We do not know a week, a month, or a quarter when Ternus expects supply to catch demand. He said he cannot predict it.

If you already have a Duo and the inner screen is fine, this news does not ask you to do anything. If the inner screen has developed lines, contact AppleCare, which is what Apple told affected users last week. If you are still waiting for delivery, the update from the CEO is that the constraint is real as of this results cycle, the ramp is in progress, and nobody at Apple is ready to name the day the waiting stops.
