A press tour answer nobody at Nintendo was prepared for
Movie press tours are usually painfully controlled affairs. Questions are pre-screened. Jokes are media-trained. Everything is calibrated to stay on-brand. For a Nintendo movie, where the company is famously protective of its intellectual property and public image, you'd expect the event to be even more tightly managed than usual.
And then Charlie Day happened.
During a cast interview in Tokyo for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — currently in theaters — the voice actor for Luigi was asked by an interviewer: "You play Luigi, a great Italian guy. Who's your favorite Luigi in recent American history?"
Day visibly processed the question for half a second, repeated "In recent American history?!" with barely-concealed delight, then laughed hard enough that he had to collect himself before answering. Keegan-Michael Key (also in the cast) shouted something in the background. Anna Taylor-Joy, who plays Princess Peach, covered her face with her hand.
"Well, me, first of all," said Day. "Number one. Uh, Luigi Mangione... Luigi Mangione number two."
The room erupted. The clip has gone massively viral online since then.
Who is Luigi Mangione and why is this funny?
For readers outside the US who aren't following American news closely: Luigi Mangione is a 26-year-old American who is currently facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in New York City on December 4, 2024. He was caught after a brief manhunt and has been in custody since.
The case became a cultural flashpoint in America because UnitedHealthcare is one of the largest health insurance companies in the US, and there is enormous public anger in America toward health insurance companies — for denying claims, delaying care, and prioritizing profits over patients. Many Americans, rather than mourning the CEO, publicly expressed sympathy for Mangione or even celebrated the act, which shocked and divided the country.
The internet quickly made the connection that the alleged killer shares a first name with Nintendo's beloved green-overalled plumber. Some people even showed up to courtrooms in Luigi Nintendo cosplay to cheer on Mangione. The whole cultural moment was bizarre, darkly funny to some, deeply disturbing to others.
Nintendo, understandably, wanted nothing to do with any of this association. And now one of the voice actors in their movie has directly named Mangione as his second-favorite Luigi in a globally broadcast press event. While laughing.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — what you need to know
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the second Nintendo/Illumination collaboration after The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, which became one of the highest-grossing animated films ever — crossing $1.35 billion worldwide. That film became a massive hit in India too, particularly among the generation that grew up playing Mario games on older Nintendo consoles and Game Boys.
The Galaxy Movie follows the storyline loosely adapted from the beloved Super Mario Galaxy Wii games, widely considered some of the best platformers ever made. Charlie Day reprises his role as Luigi, which he played in the original 2023 film. Keegan-Michael Key returns as Toad. Anna Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach. Chris Pratt is back as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser.
The film has been generating strong early buzz and the trailers have been well-received. The Tokyo press event was part of an international promotion push for the film's global release.
Nintendo's nightmare scenario
Let's talk about why this is particularly awkward for Nintendo specifically, beyond just the obvious PR problem.
Nintendo is one of the most brand-protective companies in the history of entertainment. They are famously aggressive about copyright enforcement, controlling exactly how their characters are used, and maintaining squeaky-clean family-friendly associations for their IP. Mario, Luigi, and the entire Nintendo universe are core assets worth billions of dollars — carefully managed, tightly controlled, never allowed to be associated with anything controversial.
The Luigi Mangione meme was already a problem Nintendo couldn't directly address because engaging with it would amplify it. They stayed silent throughout 2025 as the internet ran wild with the association. Now one of their own contracted voice actors — on camera, in Tokyo, at an official press event — made the connection directly and laughed while doing it.
There's nothing Nintendo can do about it at this point except pretend it didn't happen and hope the movie does well enough that people focus on that instead. Given the 2023 film's numbers, the sequel will probably still be a massive commercial success regardless. But somewhere in a Nintendo boardroom, someone is very unhappy right now.
Charlie Day's Always Sunny instincts taking over
It's worth noting that Charlie Day is primarily known as Charlie Kelly in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia — one of the most anarchic, unpredictable sitcoms ever made. The character he plays is famously chaotic, unhinged, and willing to say absolutely anything. Day has been playing that role for nearly twenty years.
When a Nintendo press event interviewer accidentally set up the perfect straight line — asking which Luigi in recent American history is his favorite — Day's Always Sunny brain clearly overrode whatever media training he received. The laugh that preceded the answer was the laugh of a man who knows he's about to say something he probably shouldn't but can't stop himself.
The interviewer, for the record, seemed delighted. The clip suggests it may have been a deliberately mischievous question. Either way, credit to whoever asked it — they got the most memorable clip from a press event that would otherwise have disappeared into the void of promotional content.
Why Indian gamers should care about the Mario Galaxy Movie
India has a significant Nintendo nostalgia contingent — particularly among people in their 20s and 30s who grew up with the Wii, DS, or emulated versions of classic Nintendo games. Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are consistently ranked among the greatest games ever made, and the announcement of a Galaxy-inspired movie has been exciting for that audience.
The film is expected to release in India alongside its global rollout. The 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie did well in multiplexes in major Indian cities, particularly in English and Hindi dubbed versions. The sequel should follow a similar distribution pattern.
For gaming enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu and across India who want to catch The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — check PVR, INOX, and BookMyShow for release dates and dubbing options as the release approaches. Given the original film's success, a dubbed Hindi version is almost certain. Tamil dubbing is possible but less confirmed.
TamilTech's take
This is the kind of moment that reminds you why unscripted press events are infinitely more interesting than scripted ones. Charlie Day had one job at that Tokyo press tour: stay on-brand, say nice things about Nintendo, promote the movie. Instead he delivered the most viral clip of the entire press cycle in about fifteen seconds. Nintendo's PR team is presumably drafting a very carefully worded internal memo right now. The movie will still make a billion dollars. And somewhere, the internet's favorite video game character has been retroactively associated with something Nintendo's legal team would rather not think about. Welcome to 2026.
