Read this before you open ten tabs
- File on cybercrime.gov.in. If money just left your account, call 1930 first.
- Government fee is ₹0. Anyone asking you to pay to speed up a case is not the portal.
- Save UTR, UPI ID, chat screenshots, SMS, and the acknowledgement number.
- Report a financial fraud the same hour. Delay is how the money leaves the first hop.
- A portal acknowledgement is a report, not automatically an FIR. Visit cyber police if they ask.
What is an online cyber crime complaint, in one line?
File a cyber crime complaint from Tamil Nadu on cybercrime.gov.in, and call 1930 first if money just left your account. The government fee is ₹0. This guide covers the portal steps, what to save, when a report is not an FIR, and the mistakes that let money hop. It is for Tamil Nadu readers who lost UPI cash or spotted a fake Instagram, not anyone charging to speed a case.
You opened GPay at 11 pm because a bank officer on WhatsApp said your KYC was pending. Three taps later, ₹18,000 is gone. Or a cloned Instagram is DMing your cousins. That is when this complaint exists, not after you have argued with the scammer for two days.
The public site is cybercrime.gov.in. It sits under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, I4C, which the Ministry of Home Affairs runs. You are not emailing a helpful stranger. You are putting a number on a government record.
UPI to the milkman, a Flipkart OTP, a Jio recharge SMS, a job PDF that wants a registration fee: the same Phone is the crime scene. An online complaint is how you start the trail the same night from a Coimbatore PG or a Madurai 2BHK.
The portal does not magically reverse the debit. Your bank and the freeze process decide that. It also does not always equal an FIR. Some files still need you at a Tamil Nadu cyber crime police station. Treat the form as the official first punch, not the full fight.
How do you file a cyber crime complaint online from Tamil Nadu?
Go to cybercrime.gov.in in a browser you trust, not a sponsored link that almost spells the same name, and choose financial fraud if money moved or the other cyber crime option if it did not.
If rupees just left, call 1930 from that same Phone before you write an essay. The helpline is the national number for financial cyber fraud. Tell them the amount, the app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, your bank app), and the time. Then do the portal form. Parallel, not instead.
Keep this packet ready. Amount in numbers. Date and time. UTR or UPI reference. The UPI ID or account the money went to. Bank SMS. Full chat screenshots, not one cropped bubble. The fake number or Instagram handle. If a site was involved, the URL as it appeared.
Log in the way the portal asks, usually a mobile number and OTP. Fill the fields like you are helping a cop who was not in the room. Tamil or English is fine if your facts stay exact. A stylish paragraph that gets the UPI ID wrong is useless. Submit, then photograph the acknowledgement number. Save it in Notes too. That number is what you quote to the bank, to 1930, and later at the station.
Not a money case? Same site, other track. Hacked mail, impersonation, phishing page, fake job, an OTP drain that failed. Attach what the form accepts. Then stop. Do not upload Aadhaar for verification to a person who calls five minutes later claiming they are Cyber Cell Chennai. Real follow-up comes through the portal or a police station with a board, not a Truecaller name.
You can still walk into a district cyber crime police station in Tamil Nadu with the same folder. Online first does not ban in-person. Take the acknowledgement, the screenshots, and your ID.
Tell your bank's fraud desk or the in-app report-fraud button as well. The portal does not always ring your bank for you. Freeze UPI, change the UPI PIN, block the card. Police paper and bank paper are two doors.
What does it cost to report cyber crime online?
It costs ₹0 on the government portal, ₹0 on 1930, and ₹0 at a cyber police station. If someone wants a fee to escalate your cyber crime complaint online, they are not the government.
Use the table like a menu, not a shopping cart. You can pick more than one row the same night.
| Where you report | Best for | Fee | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1930 helpline | UPI, card, net-banking debit that just happened | ₹0 | Call immediately |
| cybercrime.gov.in — financial fraud | Same debit, with screenshots and UTR | ₹0 | Same night, with 1930 |
| cybercrime.gov.in — other cyber crime | Hacked account, fake profile, phishing, job-fee cheat | ₹0 | Same night, even with no debit |
| Bank or UPI app fraud desk | Blocking UPI, card, dispute | ₹0 | Parallel to 1930 |
| Local cyber crime police station | FIR, extra evidence, follow-up | ₹0 | After you have the acknowledgement |
There is no official premium FIR slab and no Tamil Nadu e-seva charge for this form. Save the cash for the bus if the station calls you in.
Money moved: 1930 plus portal plus bank. No money yet, but a fake you or a hacked mail: portal, then lock the account. Police asked you to come: go. Do not pay a Facebook page in the middle of that list.
Which mistakes get people into trouble?
Waiting is the expensive one. You fight the scammer, you post the screenshot on X, you ask the family group. The money has already hopped. Report first. Rant after the acknowledgement is in your gallery.
The callback is the dangerous one. A calm voice says they are from cyber crime and they need an OTP to reverse the amount. Police do not ask for your UPI PIN, card OTP, or net-banking password. Cut the call. File on the portal yourself. If you already shared an OTP, call the bank and 1930 again. Do not test a second OTP to see if it helps.
Bad evidence is the messy one. Cropped chats. No UTR. Some number ending 3847. Cops cannot raid a feeling. Export the WhatsApp chat. Save the SMS thread. Write ₹18,000, not around 18k. If the fake site is gone, your screenshot of the URL still matters.
Recovery agents are the costly one. After a fraud, ads and DMs appear like ants. Police and I4C public awareness keep pointing at this second bite: you pay processing, then you have two holes. If it is not your bank, not 1930, not cybercrime.gov.in, not a station, do not transfer fees.
Paperwork confusion is the quiet one. People screenshot the acknowledgement, then ignore the station visit. The number is a report, not a magic FIR. If cyber police in your district ask you to come, go. Ghosting them is how a file sits.
Stop googling random cyber cell numbers. Lookalike sites and paid ads sit on the same keyword you typed. Bookmark cybercrime.gov.in once. Use that bookmark next time.
What should you do now?
If the debit is still warm, call 1930, freeze UPI with the bank, then file on cybercrime.gov.in with every screenshot you still have.
If nobody has taken money yet — cloned profile, weird login mail, a job that smells — change passwords, turn on two-factor, then file the other cyber crime report on the same portal. Warn the friends who might get the fake DM.
Keep the acknowledgement. Share it only with the bank and police. Do not send Aadhaar, PAN, or a selfie video to a helper on Telegram.
That is the Tamil Nadu version of this whole search. Official site. Free. Same night. No uncle in the middle.
