Redmi is making the Note 15 5G look a lot more interesting
The standard Redmi Note 15 5G has been available in India since January, and it's been doing solid numbers in the ₹18,000-22,000 segment. But Redmi clearly feels there's room for one more — and the Special Edition they're bringing on April 2 might be exactly what budget buyers who wanted something a little flashier were waiting for.
Redmi has confirmed the launch date but hasn't shared full pricing details yet. What we do know: the phone goes on sale via Flipkart, and the design is already teased. Red faux-leather rear panel. Gold-colored frame. It's bold, it's premium-looking for the price, and it's the kind of color option that stands out on a shelf — or on a desk at college.
What the Special Edition actually is
Let's be straight about this: the Redmi Note 15 5G Special Edition is not a hardware upgrade over the standard model. It's a new color variant — specifically, it appears to be the same phone as the Redmi Note 15 5G New Year Cherry Red Edition that Redmi sold in China earlier this year, now being rebranded and brought to India.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. The standard Redmi Note 15 5G is a well-specced phone for its price. Getting that same hardware in a limited-edition colorway with a premium faux-leather finish is genuinely appealing to a segment of buyers who care about how their phone looks and feels in hand — and in India, that segment is larger than specs-focused reviewers often acknowledge.
Faux-leather backs have had a serious moment in the budget-to-mid-range Android world over the past two years. Vivo's V-series used it effectively. Samsung tried it on the Galaxy S23 FE. The texture feels premium, resists fingerprints, and gives the phone a visual distinction that glass backs at this price point often lack.
Expected specs — what you're getting inside
Since this is expected to be spec-identical to the standard Redmi Note 15 5G, here's what the hardware looks like:
Display: 6.77-inch AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate. At this price, an AMOLED display with 120Hz is genuinely competitive — smooth scrolling, good outdoor visibility, vibrant colors for watching YouTube Reels and IPL highlights.
Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. This is a capable chip for everyday use — handles multitasking, social media, streaming, and casual gaming without breaking a sweat. It's not going to win benchmark wars against Snapdragon 8-series chips, but for a phone in this segment, it's the right call for battery efficiency and sustained performance.
Camera: 108MP primary sensor on the rear, paired with a secondary lens. 20MP front camera — better than most competitors at this price for selfies and video calls. The 108MP sensor doesn't automatically mean great photos (processing matters as much as megapixels), but Redmi has been steadily improving its camera tuning in the Note series.
Battery: 5,520mAh with 45W fast charging. That's a big battery even by 2026 standards. Real-world usage in Indian conditions — heavy data usage, outdoor navigation, long screen-on time — should comfortably give you a full day and then some. The 45W charging means you can top up from 20% to 80% in roughly 40 minutes.
Software: MIUI on Android — the usual Xiaomi software experience with its customizations and occasional ads in the UI that some users find annoying. No changes expected here versus the standard model.
Flipkart exclusive — what that means for you
The Special Edition is a Flipkart-only launch. That's the standard Xiaomi/Redmi playbook in India — create platform-exclusive availability to drive traffic and create a sense of urgency around sales. Expect a flash sale-style launch on April 2 with limited initial stock, followed by broader availability in subsequent weeks.
If you're planning to buy on launch day, set a Flipkart reminder now. Redmi launches tend to sell out fast in the first few hours, and the Special Edition colorway will likely be even more limited than the standard variants.
For buyers who aren't in a rush, waiting a week or two after launch is usually the smarter move — stock stabilizes, and early user reviews start appearing to confirm real-world performance matches expectations.
Price — what to expect
Redmi hasn't officially revealed the price yet, but based on the standard Redmi Note 15 5G pricing in India (which launched at approximately ₹19,999 for the base variant), the Special Edition is likely to come in at ₹19,999 to ₹21,499. Special Edition colorways typically carry a small premium over the base model — but not always. Xiaomi has previously launched special variants at the same price as the standard in India to maximize volume.
Either way, you're looking at a phone in the ₹20,000 range that packs a 108MP camera, AMOLED display, large battery, and a design that looks like it costs significantly more. That's been the Redmi Note series value proposition for years, and the Special Edition doesn't change the equation.
Should you wait for the Special Edition or just buy the standard Note 15 5G now?
Honest answer: if you want the red leather look, wait. It's genuinely a more attractive design than the standard colorways. If you don't care about the color and just want the phone's internals, the standard Redmi Note 15 5G is already available and there's no reason to delay your purchase by a week.
The Special Edition adds visual appeal, not hardware value. That's a perfectly legitimate reason to choose one phone over another — especially when the price difference is likely minimal or zero.
Also worth noting: Redmi is also launching the Redmi 15A on March 27 — a more budget-focused option for buyers who want to spend under ₹12,000-14,000. If you're price-sensitive, check that out before deciding on the Note 15 SE.
TamilTech's take
The Redmi Note 15 Special Edition is exactly what it looks like — a fresh coat of paint on a solid, proven device. Redmi isn't pretending otherwise. The Cherry Red colorway with the leather texture looks genuinely good in the teasers, and if you were already considering the Note 15 5G, this Special Edition gives you a more distinctive option at likely the same price.
The April 2 launch gives you about a week to make a decision. Our suggestion: if the color speaks to you and you're in the market for a ₹20,000 phone, this is one of the better options in that bracket. Just be ready on Flipkart on launch day if you want to grab it in the first wave of stock.
