WD Unveils Storage Roadmap: 40TB UltraSMR Now, HAMR Drives Late 2026, and 140TB HDDs by the 2030s
On February 3, 2026, at WD Innovation Day in New York City, the company formerly known as Western Digital — now officially rebranded as simply WD with a new logo — revealed the most ambitious hard drive roadmap the storage industry has seen in a decade. The announcements span from products shipping today to technologies that will define data storage through the 2030s, and they carry particular significance for India's exploding data center market.
The headline numbers are staggering: a 40TB UltraSMR HDD already qualifying with hyperscalers, HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) drives arriving late 2026 with a proprietary vertical-emitting laser, a path to 10TB per platter by 2028, and an ultimate roadmap to 140TB drives in the 2030s using 14-platter designs. On the performance side, WD's High Bandwidth Drive Technology (HBDT) already delivers 570MB/s — nearly double conventional HDD speeds — with a roadmap to 2GB/s, approaching QLC SSD territory.
This is not incremental progress. This is WD declaring that the hard drive is not merely surviving in the age of AI and SSDs — it is the only storage technology that can economically scale to the exabyte demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The WD Rebrand: More Than a Name Change
Before diving into the technology, the rebrand itself is worth understanding. Western Digital officially shortened its name to WD with a completely new visual identity. This follows the SanDisk spinoff completed in February 2025, which separated the company's flash/SSD business (now independent SanDisk) from its HDD business (now pure-play WD).
