Here's the thing — Meta just broke up with open source
For years, Meta was the open-source AI hero. Llama 1, Llama 2, Llama 3, Llama 4 — each release was handed out freely to developers, researchers, startups, and yes, to competitors. The narrative was clean: Meta couldn't catch OpenAI and Anthropic at the closed-model game, so it would out-distribute them by giving the models away.
On April 8, 2026, that narrative ended. Meta announced Muse Spark, the first model out of the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs, and it's closed source. You can use it on meta.ai, through the Meta AI app, and eventually inside Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — but you cannot download the weights. You cannot fine-tune it yourself. You cannot run it on your own infrastructure.
