₹12,999 for Android 16 and a 6,300mAh battery — Redmi is not playing around
Budget phones in India have a pattern: you get either a big battery or modern software, rarely both. The Redmi 15A 5G just launched at ₹12,999 and is trying to deliver both simultaneously — Android 16 straight out of the box, a 6,300mAh battery that Xiaomi says will last two full days, and Google's Circle to Search on a phone that costs less than a decent pair of earphones.
Sales kick off on April 3, 2026, on Flipkart, mi.com, and authorised Xiaomi retail stores. If you've been waiting for a good budget 5G upgrade or need a second phone for your parents, this is worth looking at closely before the first sale floods out.
Pricing — three variants, which one should you pick?
The Redmi 15A 5G comes in three configurations:
₹12,999 — 4GB RAM + 64GB storage
₹14,499 — 4GB RAM + 128GB storage
₹16,499 — 6GB RAM + 128GB storage
Honest recommendation: skip the base 64GB variant unless storage genuinely doesn't matter to you. In 2026, 64GB fills up faster than you'd expect — apps, photos, WhatsApp media. The 4GB + 128GB at ₹14,499 is the sweet spot. If you're buying this for yourself and plan to keep it two years, the 6GB + 128GB at ₹16,499 is worth the extra ₹2,000 for the RAM headroom.
Colors available: Awesome Blue, Amaze Purple, and Ace Black.
Display — 6.9-inch, 120Hz, 800 nits
The Redmi 15A 5G has a large 6.9-inch HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. At this price, 120Hz is not guaranteed — many phones in the ₹10,000-₹13,000 range still ship with 60Hz panels — so this is a genuine win for smooth scrolling and gaming.
Peak brightness is 800 nits, which is adequate for outdoor use in most conditions. The display features Wet Touch Technology 2.0, which means it responds accurately to touch even with damp fingers — useful if you're using your phone while cooking, in rain, or at the gym.
Three TÜV Rheinland certifications cover eye strain — low blue light, flicker-free, and circadian dimming. Good for late-night scrollers.
Processor — Unisoc T8300, 6nm
The Redmi 15A 5G runs on the Unisoc T8300 — a 6nm octa-core chip. This is not a name most people know, and that's fair: Unisoc doesn't have the brand recognition of Snapdragon or MediaTek. But the T8300 at 6nm is a capable chip for daily tasks — calling, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, casual gaming like Subway Surfers or Candy Crush. It won't handle BGMI at high settings smoothly, but that's not what this phone is designed for.
The 5G modem supports multiple 5G bands relevant to Indian carriers — Jio 5G and Airtel 5G both work on this device.
Battery — 6,300mAh with 15W charging
This is the headline spec. 6,300mAh is genuinely large — bigger than most phones in the ₹20,000-₹25,000 range. For typical Indian usage — heavy WhatsApp, some YouTube, calls, social media — this should comfortably last two full days between charges.
Charging is 15W wired via USB-C, and a charger is included in the box (which is not a given at this price in 2026). Wireless charging isn't supported, but that's expected at this price point. There's also 7.5W reverse wired charging — you can use the Redmi 15A 5G to charge another device in a pinch.
Camera — 32MP rear, 8MP front
The rear camera system is a 32MP AI dual camera setup. For a sub-₹13,000 phone, 32MP is solid on paper. The AI processing through HyperOS 3.0 helps with scene recognition and photo enhancement. Don't expect night photography miracles, but daytime shots and outdoor portraits should come out well.
The front camera is 8MP — fine for selfies and video calls. Nothing exceptional but nothing embarrassing either.
Software — Android 16 + HyperOS 3.0 + 4 years of updates
This is where the Redmi 15A 5G genuinely stands out for a budget phone. Android 16 out of the box is unusual at this price — most sub-₹15,000 phones in India launch on Android 14 or 15. Xiaomi is promising 4 years of Android updates and 6 years of security patches, which means this phone should receive updates until at least 2030.
Circle to Search is built in — the Google feature that lets you circle anything on your screen to search for it. Great for shopping, identifying things in photos, or quickly looking up something you see in a video without leaving the app.
Google Gemini AI assistant is also included.
Build and other specs
IP52 rating — splash and dust resistant, not fully waterproof. Side-mounted fingerprint scanner. 3.5mm headphone jack (still here, thankfully). Dual SIM. Bluetooth 5.4. Dual-band Wi-Fi. MicroSD support up to 1TB. RAM expansion up to 6GB using storage as virtual RAM.
The phone is slightly lighter and more compact than you'd expect for a 6.9-inch screen — Xiaomi has managed the form factor reasonably well.
How does it compare to the competition?
At ₹12,999-₹16,499, the Redmi 15A 5G is competing with the Realme Narzo 80 (similar battery, slightly weaker software commitment), Samsung Galaxy A16e (Samsung brand trust, Exynos chip), and Tecno Spark 50 5G (₹10,999 with Dimensity 6300 but less compelling software updates).
The Redmi 15A 5G's Android 16 launch + 4-year update promise is the differentiator that most direct competitors can't match. If software longevity matters to you — and it should, given how long most Indians keep their budget phones — this wins the comparison.
TamilTech's take
At ₹14,499 (the 4GB + 128GB sweet spot), the Redmi 15A 5G is a compelling buy for first-time 5G upgraders, students, parents, or anyone who needs a reliable daily driver without spending ₹20,000+. The battery alone justifies the price for heavy users. Android 16 out of the box with a 4-year update promise is class-leading. The Unisoc chip won't impress benchmarks but handles real-world usage fine. Set a reminder for April 3, 9 AM on Flipkart — the first sale will move fast.
