Two phones, same day, same time — someone planned this
Tomorrow, April 2, at exactly 12 PM IST, two smartphones go on sale in India simultaneously. Vivo V70 FE on Amazon. Realme 16 5G on Flipkart. Both in the ₹30,000-₹37,000 bracket. Both with 7,000mAh batteries. Both running Android 16 out of the box.
This isn't a coincidence — both brands clearly knew about each other's launch date and decided to go head-to-head anyway. The result is that Indian buyers have a genuinely interesting choice to make in the next 24 hours. Here's the full breakdown so you can decide tonight.
Vivo V70 FE — what we know
The V70 FE is Vivo's first-ever Fan Edition phone in the V series — which basically means it's a more affordable version of the V70 and V70 Elite that launched earlier. The "FE" positioning is similar to Samsung's approach: take the flagship's design language and most exciting features, trim some specs, and price it lower.
The headline spec is the 200MP primary camera. That's a genuinely impressive number — most phones in this price range are offering 50MP or 108MP. Whether 200MP translates to better photos in real-world conditions depends heavily on the sensor size and processing, which we'll know only after full reviews drop. The camera also has OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation), which is important — high megapixel counts are useless if the images are blurry from hand shake.
Display: 6.83-inch 1.5K flat AMOLED, 120Hz refresh rate, 1,900 nits peak brightness. That's a big, bright screen — the 1.5K resolution (higher than standard FHD+) should make text and images noticeably sharper. For a sub-₹40,000 phone, this is a premium-level display.
Battery: 7,000mAh with 90W fast charging. At 90W, the 7,000mAh battery should charge fully in about 60-70 minutes. That's a meaningful advantage — many phones with large batteries charge at 33W or 45W, making them take 2+ hours to top up.
Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7360 Turbo. Solid mid-range chip — good for everyday tasks, decent gaming, nothing extraordinary. Not a flagship processor, but appropriate for the price.
IP ratings: Both IP68 (submerged in 1.5m of water for 30 minutes) and IP69 (withstands high-pressure water jets). Having both ratings is unusual and practically useful — it means this phone can handle rain, spills, and accidental dunks without drama.
Software: OriginOS 6 based on Android 16. Vivo promises 4 years of OS updates and 6 years of security updates — that's excellent long-term support for a mid-range phone.
Colours: Monsoon Blue (with Darkness Glow Technology — it glows in low light, which is either cool or gimmicky depending on your taste) and Northern Lights Purple.
Expected price: ₹30,000-₹40,000. The base variant should land under ₹35,000 based on current information.
Realme 16 5G — what we know
Realme is positioning the 16 5G very differently. Where Vivo is leading with camera megapixels, Realme is leading with design and dual Sony sensors.
Camera: 50MP Sony primary sensor on the back, 50MP Sony sensor on the front. Sony sensors are known for their colour accuracy and performance in low light — two Sony sensors in this price range is genuinely notable. There's also a selfie mirror built into the back panel, which is either a fun party trick or a useful tool for vloggers, depending on how you look at it.
Design: Realme is calling this their "Slimmest Air Design" — at 8.1mm thin despite having a 7,000mAh battery. Getting that combination right (huge battery, thin profile) is genuinely difficult, and if Realme has pulled it off, it's a meaningful achievement. The phone has a "Gleaming Wings" finish on the back.
Display: 6.57-inch FHD+ AMOLED, 120Hz. Smaller and lower resolution than the Vivo V70 FE's 6.83-inch 1.5K panel. If you prefer a more compact phone, this is your pick.
Battery: 7,000mAh with 60W charging. The 60W charging is slower than Vivo's 90W — you're looking at 90+ minutes for a full charge vs. Vivo's ~65 minutes. Not a dealbreaker, but worth noting if you're frequently charging on the go.
Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 6400 SoC. One step below the Vivo's Dimensity 7360. Fine for daily use, but Vivo wins on raw processor performance.
IP rating: IP69. One rating vs. Vivo's dual IP68+IP69. Minor difference in practice — both are waterproof enough for daily life.
Software: Realme UI 7.0 on Android 16. Realme's update track record has been inconsistent historically, but recent phones have improved.
Expected price: ₹31,999 base (8GB/128GB), ₹36,999 top variant (12GB/256GB). Available on Flipkart.
Head-to-head: which one wins what
Camera: Vivo wins on specs (200MP vs 50MP), Realme wins on sensor quality (Sony sensors are proven). If you're a photography enthusiast who wants the best low-light performance, Realme's Sony sensors might actually produce better photos. If you want maximum zoom and detail extraction, Vivo's 200MP has the edge. We'll know for sure only after full camera comparisons, but both are strong.
Battery life: Tied on capacity (both 7,000mAh). Vivo wins on charging speed (90W vs 60W). Both should easily last a full day with heavy use.
Display: Vivo wins clearly — larger (6.83" vs 6.57"), higher resolution (1.5K vs FHD+), brighter (1,900 nits vs unconfirmed). If display quality matters to you, V70 FE is the pick.
Design and size: Realme wins — thinner (8.1mm), more compact. If you prefer a phone that fits better in one hand and pockets, Realme 16 5G is the choice.
Waterproofing: Vivo wins marginally with both IP68+IP69 ratings.
Long-term support: Vivo wins with confirmed 4 years OS + 6 years security.
Processor: Vivo wins — Dimensity 7360 Turbo vs Dimensity 6400.
Where to buy: Vivo on Amazon, Realme on Flipkart. Both should have launch offers, bank discounts, and no-cost EMI options. Amazon tends to have better bank card deals, Flipkart tends to have better exchange offers.
TamilTech's verdict — who should buy which
Buy Vivo V70 FE if: You want the best display in this price range. You charge your phone quickly (90W is fast). You want maximum camera resolution. You do a lot of outdoor activities and want maximum water protection.
Buy Realme 16 5G if: You want Sony sensor camera quality over megapixel count. You prefer a thinner, more compact phone. You're a front camera user — 50MP Sony selfie camera is exceptional. You want the slimmest possible phone with a big battery.
Both phones launch tomorrow at 12 PM. Set a reminder, check both Amazon and Flipkart for launch discounts, and make your call. Either way, ₹30,000-₹37,000 has never bought this much phone in India.
